“Heroes are not giant statues framed against a red sky. They are individuals who say, “This is my community, and it is my responsibility to make it better.” — Tom McCall, late Oregon governor

Everyone in Jackson County deserves reasonable access to public libraries. Libraries are community centers, serving all ages with programs and materials. Businesses look to library health when judging the best places to locate — it’s economic payback.

Most important is the impact libraries have on making our children literate and ready for school. Last December, the Jackson County Library Foundation newsletter reported our libraries offer story times to 24,000 children a year, to 1,000 day-care kids and Summer Reading attracting 5,000. Children who start school ready are successful.

The Oregonian ran a story March 30, “It takes a community to get kids ready for kindergarten” — be a hero, vote yes for libraries. — Vicki A. Bryden, Medford
