Buying civilization

April 12, Mail Tribune:

If you haven’t visited a public library on a Saturday, I recommend it. The joy of seeing children and adults of all ages excited to be there, to be finding and checking out books, is a wonderful and ordinary experience.

Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. wrote, “I like to pay taxes. With them, I buy civilization.” To keep our public libraries will require property taxes for an operating levy, like we have for fire districts. And like fire districts, the library district will operate separately from the county budget with an elected board of directors.

Libraries provide the most inexpensive way to educate, and are available to those without the Internet. They are a vital aspect of American democracy and civilization.

Watch for ballots after May 2 and buy civilization. Vote for libraries before May 20. — Carol Doty, Medford
